Washcloth #5 ~ Tulip

This stitch is absolutely gorgeous. The texture is wonderful and the overall pattern is very eye-catching! This pattern is available as an ad-free PDF in my Ravelry store.

DESCRIPTION: This stitch creates a gently textured fabric. It would be suitable for a baby blanket, scarf,
or almost any other design.

The Tulip Stitch Washcloth is the fifth in my Washcloth Collection.
Every other Saturday in 2021, I will release a washcloth pattern. Some will be lacy and light and some will be sturdy and dense. The first will typically, but not always, be free. The second will usually be paid. At the end of the year, there will be an e-book for sale that contains all the patterns, plus 3 bonus patterns. By the end of the year you will have a lovely collection of washcloths and you will probably have learned some new stitches!

GAUGE & SIZING: Gauge (tension) isn’t critical in this pattern, although a larger hook’s tension may make the fabric too holey and fragile to make a good washcloth.
Working the chain with the 4.0 mm prevents the washcloth from arcing.

This pattern is written to produce a washcloth roughly 9.5 inches by 9.5 inches. If you would like to change the size, simply chain the width you’d like, making sure it’s a multiple of 4, then add 5 more chains

ABBREVIATIONS & STITCHES USED:
ch = chain
sk = skip
st = stitch
SC = single crochet
DC = double crochet
** = Repeat the instructions inside the asterisks the indicated number of times.
() Stitches within the parentheses are all worked into the same stitch
{ } The number inside brackets indicates the number of stitches in the row
After row 1, you will be working into the first chain of your chain 4, not the stitch.
(1 SC, ch 3, 3 DC) = one stitch

MATERIALS:
About 120 yards of cotton or cotton blend yarn (Such as Paintbox Yarns Cotton Aran or Dishie from WeCrochet)

A 4.0 mm (G/6) hook and a 3.75 mm
hook.

Tapestry needle for weaving in ends

Stitch markers if desired.

Pattern

Using the 4.0 mm hook, ch 45

Switch to the 3.75 mm hook.

1. Work 3 DC in the 5th chain from hook. Sk 3 chains and single crochet in the next one.

*Ch 3. 3 DC in the same stitch as the SC. Sk 3 chains. SC in the next chain.

Repeat across, ending with 1 SC. Turn.

2. Ch 4,. Work 3 DC into the first of the four chains you just made. 1 SC in the next ch 3 space.

*Ch 3. 3 DC in the same stitch as the SC. In the next ch 3 space, 1 SC.*

Repeat across, ending with 1 SC under the ch 4.

Repeat row 2 until the washcloth reaches 9.5″ or your desired size,

Finishing

Weave in your ends:

Thread the needle with one yarn tail. Weave the needle back through several stitches, about an inch. Turn and go back through, beginning in the second stitch from needle. Repeat once more. Repeat with any other yarn tails. Snip the tails.

I hope you like this stitch! It’s one of my favorites and it makes a lovely blanket. You can also find an ad-free version in my Ravelry store here.

  1. I have been enjoying your wash cloth patterns. To keep me occupied during pandemic shut downs in my area, I had began making dish cloths so I could practice new stitches and patterns. A small project let me have a senes of accomplishment. I look forward to making all the ones you publish!
